The check engine light had not yet come on. My car had 95000 miles on it, and it was purchased and registered in California. That was definitely a relief since this is an expensive fix. I took it to the dealer to have it evaluated and they came back and told me it would be covered under the 6 year 60000 warranty. Then I unscrewed the 10mm nuts & bolts and found the crack in the exhaust manifold bellows. So I took the plastic underbody engine cover off (6 pop-clips, 4 bolts) and sprayed down the heat shield and had huge bubbles. So I started looking for a leak by pressurizing the exhaust and spraying it down with soapy water. I had a hard time finding this same issue for this generation Forester. There was even a Technical Service Bulletin stating that the exhaust manifold may have been installed under stressful conditions. I did some research and found that several Outbacks have had an issue with their exhaust manifold bellows cracking. I started noticing exhaust fumes in the cabin while idling at a stop.
